Meet the Sheep

Stock  •  Meat  •  Wool

Our Tunis sheep are the pride of our farm. We have both registered and unregistered Tunis, as well as some Tunis crosses. We chose Tunis because they are an American heritage breed.

Tunis sheep trace back to stock in the late 18th century. They were brought to this country from Tunisia as a gift to George Washington. Prior to the Civil War, Tunis were the primary breed of meat sheep in the upper South and mid-Atlantic regions of the US. They were popular in part because they could thrive in the heat and humidity.

We continue to keep Tunis because of their mild temperament, excellent mothering, quality wool, and tender, mild meat. We are members of the Livestock Conservancy, which is a great place to read more about Tunis Sheep. See our Tunis-related offerings below.

sheep stock
Stock for Breeding, FFA, 4-H Projects

We have registered Tunis ewe and ram lambs available for sale after weaning in both the spring and the fall. Contact us to learn about when we will have lambs available and put in a reservation!

We started our flock with show lines and continue to refine our animals to perform well in both the show ring and on the farm. Our Tunis are friendly and have the characteristic mild temperament, making them a great choice for kids that are learning to work with animals. They are also suitable as replacement stock to Tunis breeders, and they make a great addition to a homestead wanting to get started with a few sheep.

Our animals are trained to electric wire and netting. They are also accustomed to living with our Akbash x Great Pyrenees guardian dogs.

Whole/Half Lambs for Custom Processing

We offer whole and half lambs for custom processing. Contact us to reserve a lamb, ask questions, or get advice on recipes.

Tunis meat is known to be mild and tender, taking top honors in a blind taste test in 2009. Our lambs are raised on pasture and supplemented with grain, allowing us to finish them around 6 months of age. This results in a meaty carcass with an appropriate amount of fat to make the meat tender, juicy, and flavorful.

sheep fleece
Raw Fleeces

Our Tunis have soft, crimpy fleece that is great for hand weaving or other fiber arts. As is common in Tunis flocks, our wool varies from animal to animal. Some have very crimpy wool that is more open, and others have more dense wool. Contact us and describe what you’re looking for.

We tag all of our fleeces at shearing time so we can send a picture of the fleece and the sheep that it came from. We have started using wool coats of many of our sheep to keep the fleeces cleaner for processing by hand or at the mill. We also participate in the Livestock Conservancy Shave ‘Em to Save ‘Em, and would be happy to send you a stamp with your purchase!

yarn
Yarn and Roving

We’re excited to offer pin-drafted roving and yarn that has been spun from our flock! We have 3-ply and 2-ply DK weight, and 3-ply worsted weight yarn. This will make a great gift for you or any special knitter/crocheter/fiber artist in your life!

We participate in the Livestock Conservancy Shave ‘Em to Save ‘Em program and would be happy to send you a stamp with your purchase! Contact us for pricing and any other questions.
